About Us
Memorial Baja is a group Memorial University students working together to meet the various demands encountered in building an off-road racing vehicle. From marketing to advanced engineering design, students are challenged and ultimately brought together in a positive learning experience.
The Car
A Baja SAE vehicle is a single seat off-road racer. They typically weigh in under 500 pounds and are capable of speeds up to 50 km/h. All teams are supplied with a 10 hp Briggs and Stratton Engine, while the rest of the vehicle is designed and built from the ground up.
The Competition
Each year the Society of Automotive Engineers hosts three Baja competitions in different regions of North America, each of which draw out teams from over 100 universities. The competitions are designed to simulate a real world engineering project of designing an off-road vehicle capable of handling all types of rough terrain.
The competition is broken up into two components:
Static Events
The static events consist of a thorough safety inspection followed by a vehicle design presentation for the judges. Our vehicle's design and financial records are scored based on quality and application of sound engineering practices.
Dynamic Events
These events consist of short performance events and an endurance race. Short events can range from a variety of challenges that test suspension and traction, such as rock crawling, hill climbing and drag racing. The endurance test is a grueling four hour event that pushes car and driver to the limit.
